The regulating authority for lawyers are the bar associations. The statutory professional title "lawyer" (German "Rechtsanwalt") as well as the titles of the certified specialist lawyers were awarded in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Professional liability insurance: Under the German Federal Attorneys Act (Bundesrechtsanwaltsordnung), attorneys are obliged to have a professional liability insurance policy with an amount insured of 250,000 euros. The details are contained in section 51 of the Act.
Möllenhoff Rechtsanwälte has a professional liability insurance with ERGO Versicherung AG with a cover sum of EUR 4 million, which applies worldwide.

Out of court settlement:

In the event of a dispute between lawyers and their clients, the option exists – upon request – of an alternate dispute resolution at the Bar Association for the Higher Regional Court (OLG) district of Hamm (according to § 73 para 2 No 3 in connection with § 73 para 5 BRAO) or at the conciliation board of the Federal Chamber of Lawyers (§ 191 et seq BRAO) at the Federal Bar Association, to be found on the internet via the homepage of the Federal Bar Association (www.brak.de), E-Mail: schlichtungsstelle@brak.de.
